Rep.-elect Betsy Markey and Rep. John Salazar are making rounds in both of their congressional districts.

U.S. Rep.-elect Betsy Markey said her primary goal as a first-term congresswoman will be to help rebuild the country's economy.

"We're spending so much more money than we're bringing in. We've got to focus on the deficit and focus on jobs," Markey said during an interview Tuesday that included Rep. John Salazar.

Salazar was accompanying her on a whirlwind tour of Southern Colorado, including some of the counties in Markey's 4th Congressional District.

Democrats and Republicans alike showed up with questions and concerns for Congresswoman-elect Betsy Markey on Saturday.

Markey was at Fort Morgan’s City Hall to speak at a town meeting as part of a tour of the northeast plains counties in the 4th Congressional District.

It was a mostly jubilant crowd of Democrats who hugged and congratulated Markey for her win over Republican Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave in the November election.

Before the meeting, Markey pulled out her cell phone to let her supporters listen to a Nov. 11 voice mail from President-elect Barack Obama.

Facts

  • Betsy divested her 51 percent interest to her husband Jim Kelly on November 1, 2005.
  • “None of Syscom's federal contracts were awarded specifically because of the [woman-owned] designation, according to fedspending.org.” (Fender, Jessica.  “Markey Fires Back on Charges.”  The Denver Post 23 Sept. 2008.)
  • “Syscom's banner year came in 2007 while Markey worked for Salazar, when the firm took in $1.5 million in federal contracts. But the company also reaped million dollar-plus contracts in 2000 and 2001, long before she became a Senate staffer.  That's important to note, said political scientist John Straayer. ‘From what I can see, it doesn't look like they profited at all, nor do I think there was any intent to deceive,’ Straayer said.” (Fender, Jessica.  The Denver Post 17 Sept. 2008.)
  •  “The Coloradoan received written answers from Michael Collins, the Senior Communications Advisor for the General Services Administration which is the agency that processes businesses that want to bid for federal contracts. Collins was asked about whether Markey used any influence in her position with Sen. Salazar to gain federal contracts for Syscom Services. He wrote in an e-mail to the Fort Collins paper, "We have no records showing any intervention (by Markey). Based upon current review of available records, there is no information that suggests improprieties involving bids by Syscom Systems (sic), Inc." (9 News: Truth Test.  Adam Schrager.  NBC 9News.  KUSA, Denver.  23 Sept. 2008.)
  •  According to 9-News, “Senator Salazar issued a statement calling the commercial "absolutely false in every way." (Source: Salazar News Release, Sept. 13, 2005). Further, his communications director said in Markey's role focused on constituent relations she would never have crossed paths with government officials who determined contracts. "In her capacity as a regional director, serving the people of northern and eastern Colorado, Betsy Markey would not have been in contact with federal procurement officials,"” (9 News: Truth Test.  Adam Schrager.  NBC 9News.  KUSA, Denver.  23 Sept. 2008.)
