New congresswoman targets economic recovery

By LORETTA SWORD  THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
November 23, 2008

Rep.-elect Betsy Markey and Rep. John Salazar are making rounds in both of their congressional districts.

U.S. Rep.-elect Betsy Markey said her primary goal as a first-term congresswoman will be to help rebuild the country's economy.

"We're spending so much more money than we're bringing in. We've got to focus on the deficit and focus on jobs," Markey said during an interview Tuesday that included Rep. John Salazar.

Salazar was accompanying her on a whirlwind tour of Southern Colorado, including some of the counties in Markey's 4th Congressional District.

Democrats and Republicans alike showed up with questions and concerns for Congresswoman-elect Betsy Markey on Saturday.

Markey was at Fort Morgan’s City Hall to speak at a town meeting as part of a tour of the northeast plains counties in the 4th Congressional District.

It was a mostly jubilant crowd of Democrats who hugged and congratulated Markey for her win over Republican Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave in the November election.

Before the meeting, Markey pulled out her cell phone to let her supporters listen to a Nov. 11 voice mail from President-elect Barack Obama.

Supporters

Our campaign has been fortunate to receive support from Democrats, Republicans and Independents in the Fourth Congressional District and across the state. In fact, more than 1400 individuals from across the political spectrum have invested in our campaign. I am especially pleased that our entire Democratic delegation representing Colorado in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have rallied behind our campaign!

Many prominent Republicans, tired of the politics of hate and the lack of accomplishments by Marilyn Musgrave, have endorsed Betsy as the right candidate for the people of the 4th CD.  Read their comments in the following article:  LOCAL REPUBLICANS LINE UP FOR MARKEY; Former GOP Congressman, State Rep., Party Faithful Turn Away From Musgrave...

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1992, Representative Xavier Becerra is Assistant to the Speaker of the House and is the only member from Southern California currently serving on the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means. His committee is responsible for formulating our nation’s tax, Social Security, Medicare, trade and income security laws.

I think she has a varied background that will be very helpful to someone who will represent us in the 4th CD. She has a business background and has experience in Washington, D.C. and has done good work for the people in the district.

Former State Senator Peggy Reeves

I have known Betsy for many years from when she was the county chair. I think she has a superb grasp on the issues, she is a friend, an associate and I believe she will do marvelously.

State Senator Bob Bacon

It is no accident that Betsy has been successful at everything she does. She works hard and knows how to get things done.

Allison Cortner

Betsy Markey served with great distinction as the first director of computer security policy at the U.S. Department of State. She was a pioneer in the development and interpretation of computer security policies for the State Department’s information systems located throughout the world.  Betsy quickly impressed her co-workers and other State Department managers with her intelligence, her grasp of complex issues, and her ability to work with others to achieve results.

F. Lynn McNulty Former Director
Office of Information Systems Security
U.S. Department of State

Betsy worked for me in her first job after college as a staff assistant for a subcommittee in the U.S. Congress. Even then, she was smart, hard-working, principled, focused, and understood how values should drive public policy. I am pleased that as I have watched her career and her private life ever since then, she has been consistent in her values and her actions. I can't think of anyone who would be a more effective first term representatives for the people of Colorado.
